Novel transmission line boosts integrated circuit performance

Summary: Shenjian Zhang, a recent graduate from the School of Advanced Technology at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, proposed a new transmission-line design characterised by a multi-layer air gap. Transmission lines, in an integrated circuit, are responsible for transferring signals between circuits. Incorporating the air-gap design can make these lines more efficient by reducing energy dissipation. The new transmission line also comes in a compact structure, meaning it can be applied to more advanced, smaller chips.

Dr Xiao says the Tibetan Plateau is an important part of biodiversity conservation, and Dr Li believes that “comprehensive biodiversity monitoring programmes are urgently needed in the Tibetan Plateau to understand the status quo.”

Summary: According to the statistics, half of the meadows on the Tibetan Plateau are at risk of turning into black soil. Local communities often blame the pika, a small, rabbit-like mammal, for grassland degradation. However, Dr Li Li at XJTLU believes that “the key to saving the plateau’s meadows, is not to demonise the pika, but to develop a culturally acceptable solution that both controls this wild mammal’s populations and allows pastoral nomads to continue making a living”.

Improved Text Recognition to Aid Modern Life

Summary: Jing Li, a PhD student at XJTLU’s School of Advanced Technology proposed a new method to teach computers to recognise irregular text common in everyday scenarios. Li’s paper was awarded the Best Paper Runner-Up at the 27th International Conference on Neural Information Processing.

Dr Qiufeng Wang, Li’s advisor at XJTLU’s Laboratory of Cognitive Computation and Applied Technology, says: “Li considered the effectiveness of not only the rectification but also the recognition. I believe that this method can help improve scene text recognition.”

Professor Kaizhu Huang, Associate Dean of Research at the School of Advanced Technology, says: “This is one of five paper awards that LCCAT has received in recent years. It represents the recognition from counterparts in China and abroad of LCCAT’s achievement in artificial intelligence and pattern recognition.”

XJTLU Creates Algorithm that Models Human Visual Perception

Summary: A group of PhD students at XJTLU’s School of Advanced Technology have developed a new algorithm that makes it easier for software to determine the main object in an image.

Siyue Yu, a PhD student, says the algorithm empowers computers to “see”. It can help computers distinguish between the main object of an image and the background more accurately.

The research was presented at the 35th Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence Conference. The research project has received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Biodiversity summit offers China a chance to burnish its environmental credentials

Summary: The United Nations biodiversity conference, known as COP15, was held from 11 to 15 October in Kunming, China. With international travel still uncertain, the meeting was split in two, holding the first part online while putting off the second part until April 2022 when delegates hope to gather in person.

Although air quality in China has improved, “water pollution is not getting any better,” says Professor Johannes Knops, an ecologist at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. Facing challenges to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, China hopes to shore up its own biodiversity efforts.

China’s wildlife food ban is vital for public health and threatened species – our research reveals what must happen next

Summary: In February 2020, China issued a ban on eating wild meat and the related trade. It aims to close loopholes in existing legislation, which was last amended in 2016 and is being revised again now.

Dr Lingyun Xiao, a field ecologist at XJTLU, says the ban “is a useful, short-term stop gap, but must now be backed up by updated, evidence-based legislation and regulation for the future”.

Jiashu Zhang, a student enrolled in BEng Data Science and Big Data Technology, says: “Before this competition, I didn’t have any experience writing code. But doing the professional development program gave me new insight.”

Each summer, XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) holds a five-week Professional Development Programme for its Year One, Two and Three students. The programme includes technical training, workshops, corporate visits, team projects and demonstrations.

How does national culture affect the adoption of learning technology?

Summary: Three researchers, Na Li and Dr Xiaojun Zhang from XJTLU and Dr Maria Limniou at the University of Liverpool, recently published an article on Virtual Learning Environment adoption.

Based on their research, there are four ways to overcome cultural obstacles in VLE adoption: enhance teacher development in high power-distance cultures; build inclusive communities of practice in low-masculinity cultures; develop digital competence in low uncertainty avoidance culture, and improve infrastructure and support in short-term-oriented culture.
